A People’s Plan for climate Justice: Community Resilience Intensive
What Is This Program?
We are diving deep into community resilience! Join us to learn to identify issues in regional design, use solutions from many cultures for all kinds of crises— from injustice to drought, fires and floods. Let’s prepare, use our resources, and build community connections rooted in our diverse cultures.
This unique workshop series incorporates innovations from many movements including environmental justice, cultural preservation, healing justice, water harvesting, permaculture design, appropriate technology, bioremediation, and ancient wisdom to build community resilience for **Frontline communities.
With our partners Once and Future Green, we will:
- Build Community
- Dive into social justice
- Share interactive spaces
- Share our experiences and knowledge (cultural resilience)
- Work hands-on with materials for resilience hubs with everything from: solar generators, lights, food, to water, safety materials, communications, and environmental safety tools
- Learn from permaculture design, appropriate technology, water and energy harvesting, natural solutions, edible forest gardening
- Use practices from climate justice, environmental justice, popular education, and social justice movements
- Initiate a resilience hub pilot together and host a community event together to unveil it
If you are part of a Frontline community– a community of color, disabled, immigrant, working class communities, or need or live in affordable housing– 16 years old or older, and are interested in learning more about racial and social justice, climate, ecological design, building community, responding to injustices and other crises, resilience, and cultural environmental innovations, this workshop series is for you. We are resilient!

*We ask all applicants to attend all six sessions. Location is in Boulder and will be announced after participants are admitted into the program.

Can I participate if I am not able to attend all dates?
We ask all applicants to attend all sessions. Strong priority is given to those who can participate in the entire series. We are building a cohort/community in the program, and the sessions are each different and build on each other. There are only 10-20 seats available for the intensive, so it will be a selective process. Any participants who do not attend all dates will have their stipends impacted.
Note: Food, interpretation, childcare, and transportation support are available.
Can multiple people from the same household participate and receive the stipend?
Stipends will be limited to 1 per household to support as many families as possible. Multiple people from the same household may potentially participate, but again, stipends may be limited. Please reach out to info@weareflows.org with any clarification or additional questions.
How much are the stipends?
For completion of the program, and attendance in all sessions to develop an equitable resilience cohort of local leaders, participants will receive a $500 stipend. Stipends are prioritized for Frontline community members and those who qualify for Free & reduced lunch, TANF, Section 8, Medicaid, CHP+, SNAP, Family Self Sufficiency Program, Elevate Boulder, or the Nurturing Futures Guaranteed Income Program. Or those who have qualified for LEAP or EFAA emergency help in the past 2 years. Again, there are only 10-20 stipended spots. Please reach out to info@weareflows.org with any questions.
Is this training limited to those who live in Boulder County?
There are many people who are part of the Boulder County community who may or may not reside within the county, so exceptions may be made for those living outside the county, depending on the situation. If you are part of the Boulder County community, but do not live here and wish to participate, please make a note of it in your application so we can consider each situation thoughtfully.
Note: Stipends may be limited to Boulder County households due to funding restrictions.
Can I participate if I do not live in a Boulder Housing Partners residence, Affordable Housing, or Mobile Home Community?
Yes. People of color, working class, disabled, immigrant, and other Frontline community members are invited to apply and participate (see definition below). This workshop is meant to help build capacity and community for Frontline community members.
I want to learn from this training but do not come from a Frontline community. Can I still participate or observe?
A limited number of institutional spots may be reserved depending on availability. If you are coming from a government, philanthropy, non-profit, or other institution, we ask that you pay for the program, or at least part of the program. The cost is $1,850 per person. We can make limited scholarships or sliding scale spots available. Please reach out to info@weareflows.org to make arrangements. We ask that you still fill out the application as well for planning purposes.
will There be interpretation offered for any languages other than English and Spanish?
We will try to make it possible as needed. Please let us know what languages you or your community might need in order to participate and we will try to make it happen. Please reach out to info@weareflows.org with any requests or suggestions.
What is a “Frontline Community” or “Frontline Community member”?
These terms come from the Environmental Justice (EJ) movement. “Frontline” refers to groups who suffer the most from impacts of environmental and economic policies (intended or unintended), and who benefit the least from them. Communities of Color are considered primary Frontline communities because they have been proven to be targeted by environmental burdens and barriers to environmental benefits. Along with communities of color, Frontline communities also include immigrant and English-as-a-second-language communities, working class, low income, disabled, members of LGBTQIA+, single parent and multigenerational households, people who are unhoused, youth, and elders.
It can also refer to workers who are working with toxic or harsh materials (including cleaning materials), chemicals, or waste.
The EJ movement arises from these communities, recognizes their strengths, and sees them as a force for developing solutions.
Can I nominate someone else in my community to participate?
Yes thank you! Please let us know if there is someone in particular you hope will participate in the program. We do ask that they be available for all sessions, and we will still need a completed application form for them. If you are filling the application for someone else, please make sure they are aware of it, available for all sessions, and make note of it in the application (under the “name” question–the first one). You can also reach out to info@weareflows.org and we can send them an application.

What happens after the workshops?
- Participants will receive certificates and co-design a community event to unveil the resilience hub(s) and share about a justice-oriented, ecological view of resilience after the workshops series.
- We will then offer the opportunity of coaching to develop a resilience plan for their community. There will be additional limited stipends for that as well.
- In the fall, we will take a tour of inspiring resilience projects in the county.
- What else do you envision? This program is designed to seed community leadership for continued innovation, community resilience, and climate and social justice in our community and beyond!
